At the latest summit of the heads of state of all SADC (southern Africa Development Community) countries in August 2000, a list of points was produced, stating the 5 most important issues SADC should be dealing with in the near future:

  1. Poverty
  2. Debt burden and economic development
  3. HIV/AIDS
  4. The conflicts in Angola and the DR of Congo
  5. Unemployment

In order to tackle these 5 issues, SADC needs to create development in its region and the heads of state concluded that it takes 3 main resources to do so:

  1. Land
  2. Money
  3. People

There is enough land in southern Africa to grow all the food necessary for the entire population of Africa, but you need people to cultivate it in an effective and efficient manner.
There might not be enough money in southern Africa at the moment, but money is usually generated by people and foreign investors are only attracted if the country has an optimistic image, shown by the people and their work and hopes for the future.
The human resources might and should be the biggest power that southern Africa has to turn its tide.

However, it is not just people you need, it is educated people:

  • a farmer who knows how to best use his land

  • a shop-owner who knows how to do the accounts

  • a mother who knows how to teach her children about AIDS

  • a teenager who understands the world around him

  • a child who learns how to read and write

By educating people you place them in the centre of their own lives, make them responsible for their own deeds and supply them with tools for the future.

In other words: by educating people you give them a better opportunity to become masters of their own destiny and development and of that of the society around them.

Therefore education and development go hand in hand.
KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College sees itself as a centre of training, education and community development with the aim of improving the lives of people in South and southern Africa (and ultimately also in other parts of the world). KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College is placed in South Africa, close to the projects and people with whom it cooperates.
South Africa is a emerging country, with a unique transformation behind her and growing up in a fast changing environment with plenty of unexplored opportunities. The general mood in South Africa is one of optimism, yet a lot of difficult issues need to be tackled. A big gap between the rich and poor, an ever increasing crime rate, high unemployment rates and a dramatic growth of the AIDS epidemic with all its consequences are some of the main problems challenging South Africa’s future.
KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College is placed in the centre of all this and therefore it is impossible to close our eyes and pretend reality does not exist. But for most of these grand problems, there are solutions and many lie in the field of development and education. Therefore KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College believes to have a good starting point, based on many years of experience and a determination full of energy and life!
